What is a cocktail reception?
This simple event is just as it sounds, a wedding reception that reads more like a cocktail party. Think heavy hors d’oeuvres, mingling, music, and fun. Since these events are far less formal than a traditional wedding reception you and your guests will have more time to talk and share in the moment with each other.
How are they different from traditional wedding receptions?

A few things about a cocktail reception stand out and are important to note
-
- Cocktail hour: Since your reception is essentially a long cocktail hour, you can forgo this formal hour. Have guests move seamlessly from the ceremony into your reception. Have food stations open and soft music playing.
-
- Seating: Since guests are meant to mix and mingle you don’t need to assign seats. In fact, you don’t even need a seat for every guest. Add some cocktail tables, maybe a fun lounge set, encourage guests to move around
-
- Food: Since you won’t have a formal seat for everyone to try to avoid foods that require a seat. Think heavy hors d’oeuvres, nothing that requires a knife 🙂
-
- Scheduling: This type of reception encourages guests to talk and enjoy the party. If you are going to do wedding formalities (first dance, father/ daughter dance, etc), group them together. This way you only have to get everyone’s attention once 🙂
It is clear to see why these simple events are growing in popularity among brides. So if you want to enjoy your wedding without all the stress consider a cocktail reception when planning your big day.
